The creation of Elciego City of Wine had a radical effect on the life of this small town in La Rioja, one of the most important wine regions of Spain. Which is unsurprising as the twenty-first century château is a door onto the world of sensations and experiences that wine offers.
The Marques de Riscal Winery has always been a big draw, especially as it is the oldest winery in La Rioja; now, however, the new building attached to it, designed by Canadian architect, Frank O. Gehry, has added its weight as a leading architectural reference. The complex houses a hotel, an exclusive restaurant, business and convention centre and a vinotherapy spa. The baths and wraps with red grape extracts, massage with super-fine grape seed oil and the facial treatments with stabilised polyphenols that combat free radicals (the main culprits of skin ageing), are among the therapies on offer.
